What is bridal fabric?

Bridal fabric can apply to any textile or material that can be used to create a bride’s wedding dress. Because wedding dresses can vary so much from bride to bride, so too can wedding fabric. The fabric, or fabrics, you choose to create your wedding dress from is vitally important, as they will help determine the look, feel and style of your dress. Not all bridal fabrics are the same; some are best suited for summer or winter weddings, some help form structure and shape, and others will give a light and ethereal quality.

Most wedding dresses feature more than one single fabric. Often using one for the main skirt or body of the dress, and others to accent certain parts or add texture and interest.

There are the more traditional wedding dress fabrics, such as satin and taffeta, and the new, more adventurous options, such as intriguing silks including Mikado, gazar and radzmir. Gazar was the silk used to make Kate Middleton’s wedding dress.

Popular bridal fabrics include

  1. Silk
  2. Satin
  3. Chiffon
  4. Organza
  5. Cotton
  6. Lace
  7. Crepe
  8. Brocade
  9. Broderie Anglais
  10. Tulle

How is it manufactured?

Every bridal fabric has its own distinct manufacturing methods, especially depending on their structure and whether the yarns are manmade or natural.

As a lot of these fabrics are delicate in nature, a lot of time and care is spent in producing them – hence the sometimes-hefty price tags. Lace can be handmade, which is a labor-intensive process involving very skilled seamstresses. Fabrics that are made with a satin weave can be made from either natural or synthetic yarns. For example, you can find a real silk satin or a man made silk satin. They each have their own properties, that could make them suitable for your dress.

Natural fabrics are made by taking plants or other substances, such as cotton, and then breaking them down into fibers. These fibers are then spun into yarns, which are used to create fabric. Man made fabrics are made using scientific processes, which can involve chemicals and natural resources combined.

Purposes of bridal fabric

The purpose of bridal fabric is to create stunning wedding dresses for the bride. Wedding dresses can be purchased off the rack or they can be made to order. If you choose to have your wedding dress custom made, then you have the advantage of having it made from any (or as many) fabrics you wish. This is ideal if you have a very specific idea in mind of what you want your dress to look like.

Properties

Because there are so many different choices when it comes to wedding fabric, there are also many properties associated with them. Here are just a few favorite:
  • Chiffonsoft and silky with a sheer and light handle. A net-like construction with some give
  • Georgettecomes in both poly and real silk. Classic crepe face with a gossamer appearance
  • Silknatural silk with a satin weave. Lightweight and feminine with a smooth and silky face
  • Satina sleek, lustrous, and glossy weave that can be made with various yarns
  • Lacevarious styles. Lightweight and elegant with delicate and distinct patterns
  • Cotton Satin - classic satin weave, made from 100% natural cotton
  • Organzalight and transparent with a delicate sheer finish and a touch of sparkle

Advantages of bridal fabric

Every bride has her own vision of what she wants her wedding dress to look like. With wedding fabric, you have the opportunity to create the dress of your dreams. More structured fabrics, such as silks and satins will help give structure and shape to your dress, while light and airy fabrics such as chiffon and lace, can help give a feminine and dreamy aesthetic.

The bride is always the main focus of a wedding, and by choosing the perfect bridal fabrics for the wedding dress, she is sure to remain the focus for years to come.
